I just killed a puppy.
So, uh. I'm feeling really bad right now.
My mother and I found a starving puppy in the road with some severe mange and we tried to save it's life by sending it to a death sentence.
And, well, I really hate pounds now.
Like I said, my mother and I both found a scrawny black puppy wandering around in the road. It looked malnourished, starving, and like it hasn't had water in several days. He also had a really severe case of mange; he was nearly bald and was covered in scabs.
He didn't look like he was dying. He was still lively and playful, but we knew he would be dying soon. Either from starvation or getting hit.
It was just walking around in a super busy road and wouldn't get out for anything. People would honk their horns and rev their engines to scare it, but he never moved out of the way.
After finally wandering off, my mother and I both decided to take time off her lunch break to save the poor puppy and take him to a shelter that would help him and give him a home.
Not even a few hours later, they euthanize him. I doubt they even gave him a chance. And now, I feel horrible for this. They didn't tell us he wouldn't survive or else we would have kept him and taken him to a vet. They didn't tell us anything. We had to learn about this on our own when we asked if we could foster him a few hours after we left.
Like, I know shelters don't always have room, but a lot of the times it feels like they just decide if dogs will make it or not at the spot, and not give them a chance to by killing them. Like, if he dog is already injured, they "won't have time to care for it" and kill it, or if they don't think it's pretty enough to get adopted.
They tell us the shelter is the best place to take a dog that can't be taken in and cared for, but no. They'll just kill it.
They say they don't have room, but they "happily" take donated dogs in without warning the owners what their fate might be. If they would have told us that, the puppy would still be alive.
This just makes me so sad. They didn't even give him a few hours. They decided to kill him off because they either "didn't have time to treat him" and/or he was ugly. The poor thing had nasty baggy skin and far apart buggy eyes, but I still think he should be given a chance.
Anyways, I needed to vent a little bit. I just felt like I needed to get this off my chest.
Needless to say, I will never trust shelters again.
RIP cute little ugly duckling puppy.

Hey man. I dunno if this'll help much, although I do have to say that it wasn't your fault. You had no idea they were gonna euthanize him on the spot, and you're right, if you had just left him on the streets chances are he wouldn't have made it. Ya just tried to make a reasonable choice.
Don't try to beat yourself up over it too much, m'kay?

Re: I just killed a puppy.
^ I agree. I think the pup would have died either way, though. By leaving it on the street and by bringing it to a shelter.
I've seen documentaries of dog shelters being so full that smaller dogs were even crushed to death by bigger dogs, it was horrible... But of course no one can blame you, because you only tried to save it, you didn't know about this. And I would neither if I hadn't seen those documentaries.
They try to earn trust and in the end they always crush it. It's life.
So you didn't kill the pup; he would have died either way...
Wel love you bb. <3333

I agree with this too. You didn't know that would have been the dog's fate; I'm sure I would have done the same thing and taken it to my local shelter...
It's not your fault, you did the right thing<3 (Think about all those other people who were about to run it over instead of trying to help it)
Re: I just killed a puppy.
Thanks for all the support, guys. It's just hard to think they didn't give him a chance when one was so close. We were most likely going to keep him after he had recovered.
But, you guys are right. I'd rather be euthanized than ran over and starved to death. At least he died with some justice brought to him. :/

Yes, at least you were there to try and give him a chance. You yook the time too look at him and see him as a dog, while others saw it as an annoying little flea they would probably have run over with their cars...
I love you! You are a dog's hero! <3

Thanks, Jeames. I still feel bad about this, but I guess it didn't have a choice. There aren't any no-kill shelters around.
I love you, too, bbs<333

Everyone else is right, Snare. You had no idea that this would happen; it wasn't your fault. At least he died quickly and painlessly, instead of getting run over my a car and left to die. In a way, you did save the puppy from something absolutely horrible.
I bet the little puppy is prancing around in a nice place now, without fear of being run over or starved to death. :)

Such beautiful words. ;o;
Re: I just killed a puppy.
Thank you, bbs<3
You guys are right, and I guess everything is ok now. The mange was so bad it was probably incurable. That was probably another reason why they might have killed him.
At least he went peacefully.

Awww, poor thing. :'c
That wants me want to tear those people limb by limb. GRRR.
The only bright side is that it was (probably) painless, compared to whatever fate it might've had on the roadside and it need not be in pain no more.
...I still think it could've gotten better if it was tended to - I had a chicken whom broke her foot and the vet wanted to put her down. She's running around the yard right now.
Stupid shelters. They're to blame if anything.
